Getting a haircut abroad: explain how much to cut, not just 'shorter'
Use a reference photo and separate length removed from length remaining, then confirm each area before the haircut begins.

Use a photo to identify a feature
A photo can help you point to the part of a haircut you mean, but 'Exactly like this' leaves much unsaid. Explain whether you like the fringe, the sides or the overall length. Ask the stylist what is achievable with your hair.
Use a reference you are comfortable showing and avoid exposing unrelated private photos while searching. A translated description and a picture support the conversation; neither guarantees an identical result.
Separate removal from the final length
'Cut off two centimetres' and 'Leave two centimetres' describe very different requests. Say explicitly which one you mean and include the unit. Check the translated sentence before the stylist starts, especially if it contains only a number and the word 'short.'
Ask the stylist to show the intended amount on a small section of hair without cutting yet. Confirm that visible amount, not just a number in the conversation. Do not rely on a clipper setting number as a universal length; ask what length that setting will leave.
Discuss different areas separately
If your request differs by area, say so in separate sentences: 'Trim the sides. Keep the top length.' Then clarify what should happen to the fringe. Avoid pointing to one area while a long translated sentence still describes another.
If there is something you do not want changed, state it directly and ask the stylist to confirm. Before any additional service, clarify what it involves and the price. Agreement to a haircut does not by itself explain which extras you want.
Pause early when the meaning is unclear
If a translation sounds wrong or the stylist's gesture differs from your intention, ask to pause before more hair is cut. Restate one concrete instruction and show the intended area. Repeating 'No, shorter' can make the direction of the correction even less clear.
At the end, use a mirror to compare the result with the agreed points. Explain any requested adjustment specifically. For a complex style you cannot clearly discuss, consider arranging communication support before the appointment rather than improvising once cutting has begun.
