How to describe a lost item through a translator

Give staff a short description, a last-seen time and place, and a clear way to follow up without sharing unnecessary private details.

01

Name the item and a distinguishing feature

Start with 'I may have left a black backpack here.' Then add its size, appearance or a visible feature, such as a blue water bottle in the side pocket. Avoid only saying 'My bag,' or immediately listing every private item inside it.

Keep uncertainty explicit. Saying 'It was definitely by the window' when you only think it might have been there can narrow the search incorrectly. Check that the translation preserves words such as 'possibly' and 'approximately.'

02

Separate the last-seen time from the location

Give the date and approximate time, then the specific area: 'Around ten this morning, beside a table near the window.' If you remember a table number or another useful landmark, show only the relevant part of a photograph.

Avoid a long story covering several places that leaves staff guessing where you last saw the item. If unsure, list a few possible locations and which you have already checked. Your complete itinerary is usually unnecessary for describing the search.

03

Clarify how to identify the item

If staff find something similar, start by comparing its appearance or a non-sensitive detail. If more information is needed to establish ownership, first confirm who you are speaking to and the communication channel, then provide the necessary details for the situation.

Do not send an unlock code, account password or verification code to describe a missing phone or computer. A translator can help you ask about storage and collection, but is not a reason to share those secrets.

04

Agree on a next step

If the item has not been found, ask who to contact and how to check later. If it has been found, confirm the collection location and available times. Ask for the key instructions in writing so you can refer to them later.

Provide only the contact channel needed for a reply. Do not post booking references, your address or identity-document photos in public comments. A clear description helps the search; it cannot guarantee that an item will be found.
